The Blue Mage is a single player focused job released in the patch 4.5 A Requiem for Heroes for Final Fantasy XIV, and it is currently playable. It is only possible to level the Blue Mage up to level 50 right now, but the level cap will be increased when the patch 5.0 expansion set Shadowbringers releases.
The Blue Mage is very unique in the sense that you need to defeat enemies to learn a spill, and each spell has a small chance to be acquired when you defeat an enemy that has used it. This adds a lit of extra fun hunting for your Blue Mage, which is a great addition to this class.
There are also a few downsides to the Blue Mage, and the main one is that it is a limited class. This means you cannot bring this job to a dungeon, a trail, or to raids through normal party-finding queues. You can do it if you make a pre-made party tough, so it's not 100 % single player if you wish to play with your friends.
Anyway, I bet you want to unlock the Blue Mage already, but before you can do this you will need to fulfill the following two critiera:
- You must have a Discipline of War or Magic at level 50.
- You must have completed your 2.0 main scenario. Finish the quest "The Ultimate Weapon" to get this done.
Once you have completed these two criteria, head to the main Aetheryte in Limsa and speak to the Zealous Yellowjacket there. This will begin the quest "Out of the Blue", and you can begin your new journey with the Blue Mage job.
